Dear reader,
Do you have the same problem? 2011 is rapidly approaching its close and this year, as every year, we had hoped to spend the days leading up to the festive season in contemplative rather than stressful activity. Obviously, we didn't manage it. There have simply been too many fascinating projects to deal with the `Rail Symposium´ for example. This was the fourth time the event had been held in Friedrichshafen and it has been more interesting every time! Along with 180 rail specialists from around the world, Friedrichshafen also played host to one railcar and two locomotives powered by MTU drive systems. All three were drawn up next to each other at the city's Station, providing quite a sight! To give you a taste of the occasion, with this MTU eReport we have included a video showing our CTO Dr Ulrich Dohle presenting the vehicles and the MTU engines. We hope you enjoy it!
Despite all the exciting projects which still await us all this year, we wish you a restful and peaceful festive season. Until 1. February 2012, when the next issue of MTU eReport appears, we send our very best regards.
Enjoy the latest issue of MTU eReport.

Oxbo Pea Harvester uses MTU power
The Oxbo 6160M Pea Harvester can slice, de-vine, de-pod and transport up to 3.5 acres and 12,000 pounds of peas per hour. And now, thanks to MTU Series 460 engines, the 6160 is more productive and fuel-efficient than ever before. Oxbo's goals for their upgraded harvester were demanding and specific, and they field-tested for more than a year before they put the MTU engine into full production and began delivering the 6160 to customers. The Series 460 engine, rated at 315 kW (422 bhp), proved itself during Oxbo's tests. (bm)

Gas engines achieve Baltic market breakthrough
Gas engines with a total output of 8 MWe will soon be contributing to municipal power supplies for the Latvian city of Daugavpils. The order for heat and power generation plant represents the market breakthrough for MTU Onsite Energy in the Baltic States. MTU Onsite Energy dispatched the natural gas powered engines from Augsburg to the Estonian MTU distributor Baltic Marine Group (BMG). As prime contractor, BMG will provide the entire cogeneration plant as a single-source supplier. The arrangement is obviously exactly what the customers wanted and in spring 2012 two private operating companies will each put four Type 12V 4000 L62 gensets into operation. (bn)

MTU apps
MTU's first app programs are now available online. Apps are primarily intended for smartphones (mobile telephones with computer functions) and tablet computers. In an iPad app, users can find engine animations and data on power and engine components for Series 1600 units. MTU apps are available free from the Apple App Store and they represent a further advance in the use of digital media for marketing MTU and MTU Onsite Energy products and services. The 1600 app was recently joined by a smartphone app which displays the nearest MTU and MTU Onsite Energy Sales & Service Partners after identifying the user's location. Alternatively, users can nominate any other point in the world as their point of origin. After selecting the appropriate MTU or MTU Onsite Energy application, the five nearest sales and service partners can be displayed - each offering practical links for `Phone´ or `Display route´. MTU-powered Claas sets record
Claas has earned an entry in the Guinness Book of Records for harvesting performance. In September, the German manufacturer of agricultural machinery sent a combine harvester out on a 20-hour harvesting assignment in the British county of Lincolnshire. Powered by an MTU Series OM 502LA engine producing up to 431 kW, the harvester easily set up a new world record for threshing wheat despite high levels of grain moisture. "We harvested wheat to a value of ?13,000 per hour," said Dr. Theo Freye, spokesman for the Claas Board of Management. Claas was presented with the certificate verifying its world record at the agricultural machinery exhibition Agritechnica in Hanover in mid-November. (aka)

Keel-laying for the first F125 frigate
The keel-laying ceremony for the German Navy's first F125 frigate has now taken place. And its MTU engines have also been delivered. The F125 and its propulsion systems have been specially designed for international conflict prevention, crisis management and anti-piracy operations. On board each vessel, four diesel generator sets will produce the electricity for the on-board power systems and for the diesel-electric propulsion system up to a speed of 20 knots. An additional gas turbine will take the vessel up to 26 knots. The first F125 is scheduled for launch in 2013 with hand-over to the German Navy planned for three years later. (aka)

Eight MTU engines in new pilot cutters
Outstanding directional stability and a top speed of 30 knots - these are the most important features of the new pilot cutters operated by the Cuxhaven Piloting Association on assignments in the North Sea. The first vessel, the `Frya´, is currently undergoing trials and the second, the `Fresena´, will be launched next February. The beak-shaped, single-hull vessels are each powered by two MTU 10V 2000 M72 diesels. (bn)

Power for Indonesia
238 million inhabitants spread over 17,500 islands - the Indonesian government has set itself the task of providing electricity to the whole of the country by 2020. And in two remote villages in Indonesia, 12-cylinder Series 1600 MTU engines are already providing power. Since April 2011, Air Besar in West Papua has had a continuous electricity supply which has given it its first connection with the outside world. At the other end of Indonesia, in the village of Kuning Dua on Sumatra, electricity is already almost taken for granted. Here, MTU Series 1600 engines generate up to 8.5 MW of electricity to meet the growing demand. (ld)

Series 4000 used in new Loram rail grinders
Regular upkeep of rail lines reduces wear on rail cars and improves train speed, fuel savings and comfort. According to Loram Maintenance of Way, Inc. (Hamel, MN, USA), the most effective maintenance practice is the use of rail grinders, such as the new Loram RG400 Series. Powered by three 1,500 kW MTU Series 4000 engines, the RG400 can smooth and reshape tracks at up to 32 km/h (20 mph). The high power-to-weight ratio of the engines has increased fuel economy, and early tests indicate that uptime is also greater with MTU. (bm)

Keel-laying for second JHSV
On 8. November 2011, Austal Shipyards held the keel-laying ceremony for the second Joint High Speed Vessel (JHSV). The 103 meter long, aluminum transport catamaran which is powered by four MTU Type 20V 8000 engines will be named `Choctaw County´ after an area inhabited by a Native American tribe. The Chocktaw County is the second of seven transport vessels ordered from Austal by the US Coast Guard. A single JHSV can transport 600 tons of cargo over a distance of 1,200 nautical miles at speeds up to 35 knots. (kb)
